House Democrats formally transmitted the article of impeachment charging former President Trump with “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, effectively triggering the start of Trump’s second Senate impeachment trial.
However, due to a bipartisan agreement reached last week, actual trial arguments won’t begin until the week of Feb. 8. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that the agreement gives Trump’s defense team more time to prepare for the trial, while Democrats view it as a way to help President Biden to proceed with confirming some of his Cabinet nominees as his administration works to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the House transmitting the impeachment article to the Senate, lead impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is set to read it aloud on the Senate floor.
On Tuesday, the Senate will be sworn in and the summons will be issued to Trump.
