While the threat from domestic terrorism grows, especially from white supremacist groups, the Department of Homeland Security has disbanded an intelligence squad dedicated to studying homegrown terrorists, according to the Daily Beast.
The group was housed under the Office of Intelligence and Analysis and gave reports on its findings to state and local officials to help them prepare for and know the signs of festering hate groups and lone wolf attackers.
DHS told the Daily Beast that shuttering the group was just part of a restructuring effort.
“The same people are working on the issues,” a spokesperson said. “We just restructured things to be more responsive to the I&A customers within DHS and in local communities while reducing overlap with what the FBI does. We actually believe we are far more effective now.”
