Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Wednesday called President Donald Trump’s bizarre claim that wind turbines cause cancer “idiotic.”
In a speech Tuesday night, Trump claimed wind turbines decrease nearby property values and added: “They say the noise causes cancer.”
“I’m told that the White House respects my views on a lot of issues,” Grassley told reporters, as quoted by the Des Moines Register. “[Trump’s] comments on wind energy — not only as a president but when he was a candidate — were, first of all, idiotic, and it didn’t show much respect for Chuck Grassley as the grandfather of the wind energy tax credit.”
Trump’s grudge against wind turbines is years old: In 2015, he lost the last in a years-long series of legal battles that sought to prevent the construction of a wind farm near his golf resort in Aberdeen, Scotland. He tweeted about the fight dozens of times over the years.
Grassley’s home state has more than 4,000 turbines and gets 40 percent of its electricity from wind, the Associated Press noted.
