Republican members of Congress considering voting for impeachment are afraid of potentially lethal consequences for the vote, a Democratic congressman said Wednesday morning.

“The majority of them are actually paralyzed with fear,” Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) said of his Republican colleagues.

Crow told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that in conversations with colleagues Tuesday night, a couple Republican members of Congress “broke down in tears” over the impeachment vote.

“They are afraid for their lives if they vote for this impeachment,” Crow said, characterizing the conversations.  “Welcome to the club,” the Democrat said he responded.

A handful of Republicans including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) have come out in support of Trump’s impeachment.

“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing,” Cheney said in a statement Tuesday. She also faulted Trump for not quickly intervening to stop the violence.

“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” Cheney wrote.
