Rudy Giuliani, ex-President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, on Monday night railed against the now-retracted media reports that the FBI had given him a briefing warning him that Russian operatives were using him as a bullhorn to spread disinformation about Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
“They’ve been trying to make me a Russian agent for about three years, which is totally nuts. I’m probably the biggest anti-Communist you’ve ever met,” Giuliani told Fox News host Sean Hannity, apparently forgetting that Russia is no longer a communist country. “There’s no way that I’m a Russian agent, or anybody else’s agent.”
He claimed he was merely “a lawyer who was representing a client who was innocent.”
Giuliani, who is under federal investigation over potential foreign lobbying law violations in Ukraine, also ranted that he was “being persecuted” by the Biden administration for peddling conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine.
However, that investigation was going on during the Trump presidency since at least 2019. Additionally, the reason why prosecutors’ bombshell search warrant on Giuliani’s home and office last week wasn’t executed until Biden took office was because Trump’s political appointees at the Justice Department reportedly blocked the investigators’ requests for the warrant last year.
Giuliani’s comments on Monday were a response to the Washington Post, New York Times, and NBC News walking back their reports that the FBI had given him a “defensive briefing” on allegedly being a conduit for Russia’s disinformation efforts while he was heavily involved in Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.
In its correction on the story, NBC News stated that an anonymous source told the outlet that the briefing was prepared for Giuliani but ultimately was not delivered due to the criminal investigation into the lawyer.
