Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is taking a page from President Trump’s burn book to combat a claim that he talked to Trump on the phone Wednesday and told him he was “happy” to post the threatening tweet about Michael Cohen.
“#FakeNews,” he tweeted, sharing a thread posted by Edward-Isaac Dovere, a staff writer for The Atlantic. Dovere reported that Trump called Gaetz on Wednesday night to talk about Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee and the tweets Gaetz posted — and later removed and apologized for — about Cohen’s family.
“I was happy to do it for you. You just keep killing it,” Gaetz was reportedly heard telling Trump, according to Dovere.
Gaetz apologized to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and, apparently, to Cohen personally, for the tweets about Cohen’s alleged “girlfriends,” but the Florida Bar is currently looking into whether he violated an ethical code with his tweet.
