A fourth Texas Republican lawmaker announced he won’t seek another term in 2020, The New York Times was first to report Sunday evening.
Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-TX) is expected to make a statement on his decision Monday morning. The eight-term Republican is the fourth Texas GOPer to bow out of 2020 in the last week and the ninth House Republican in the past three weeks to throw in the towel. During the 2018 midterms, Marchant reclaimed his seat with just 50.6 percent of the vote.
The en masse retirement announcements from House Republicans has caucus leadership biting its collective nails, but overall the majority of the announcements thus far are from GOPers in red districts that voted overwhelmingly for President Trump. Republican leadership believes the loss of the majority in the House in 2018 is to blame for the uptick in retirements.
