Florida Republicans are warning that President Donald Trump’s Venezuela policy and his strident calls for Nicolás Maduro’s regime to be toppled could backfire if Maduro stays in place and makes Trump look weak.
According to a Sunday Washington Post report, the country’s fate is very important to some Floridian immigrant communities who hail from Venezuela and Cuba, factions that Trump desperately wants in 2020.
“We can always expect a close race in Florida,” former congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) told the Post. “The administration’s actions with regard to Venezuela could make all the difference, either in getting the President across the finish line in Florida, or, if this effort stalls, it could also cost him.”
