White House Chief Medical Adviser and COVID-19 expert Anthony Fauci on Monday urged Americans to get the vaccine for COVID-19 as soon as they can.

During a press briefing with the rest of the White House’s COVID-19 response team, which is holding regular public health briefings after the Trump White House shunned them, Fauci addressed concerns over whether people ought to hold off on getting vaccinated until there’s a new generation of vaccine that can fully address the new COVID-19 variants that have arisen.

“You need to get vaccinated when it becomes available as quickly and as expeditiously as possible throughout the country,” the health official said. “And the reason for that is that there is a fact that permeates virology, and that is that viruses cannot mutate if they don’t replicate.”

“And if you stop their replication by vaccinating widely and not giving the virus an open playing field to continue to respond to the pressures that you put on it, you will not get mutations,” he continued.
