President Trump does not want to go to the summit with leaders of six other nations this weekend and he’s only looking forward to meeting with the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson, according to the Washington Post.
Trump has privately complained to senior aides about having to attend the G-7 Summit, set to begin this weekend in France. According to the Post, he views his meeting with Johnson as the only “bright spot” of the voyage. He considers Johnson to be a potential ally and even a fellow disrupter.
Summit planners are already anticipating that Trump will rock the boat in one way or another and world leaders intend to tread lightly on topics like trade and climate change. There’s also no expectation that the summit will end with a signed communique from all seven leaders, given Trump’s behavior at the last two, especially in Canada last year when he left the meeting early and un-signed the communique via tweet from Air Force One.
“We’re not going to focus on a communique if it’s not going to work,” a European official told the Post.
