President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr., tried to downplay COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. on Thursday night.
During an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump mocked critics of his father’s crowded, mostly mask-free campaign rallies as “truly morons” and claimed that the critics were only focusing on infection rates instead of the death rate.
“Why aren’t they talking about deaths? Because the number is almost nothing,” Trump told Ingraham. “Because we’ve gotten control of this thing. We understand how it works.”
More than 1,000 Americans died on Thursday, according to the New York Times’ COVID-19 tracker. The virus has killed more than 228,000 Americans overall.
