Matt Whitaker — the acting attorney general who has come under scrutiny for alleged ethics issues and for his comments bashing special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe — will testify publicly in front of the House Judiciary Committee on February 8, its chairman Jerrold Nadler announced Tuesday.
The appearance will be Whitaker’s first in front of Congress since Trump picked him to succeed former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was ousted over his recusal from the federal Russia investigation. The hearing was announced as Trump’s nominee to permanently replace Sessions, former Attorney General Bill Barr, was testifying for his confirmation hearings in front of the Senate Judiciary committee.
Whitaker’s testimony will be part of the new Congress’ first “oversight hearing looking into the policies, management, and decision making at the Department of Justice,” according to the Judiciary Committee statement announcing his appearance.
