WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday promised a Republican alternative to Obamacare “soon,” the latest move in a seemingly never-ending dance.

“Committees are continuing to work on that and I’m sure we’re gonna see one soon,” the Ohio Republican told reporters.

Boehner didn’t answer a follow-up question about whether it would cover 16 million people, the number who have gained insurance since Obamacare became law five years ago this week.

Republicans have been promising an alternative since Obamacare passed but have failed to rally around any proposal, stymied by internal divisions and the difficulty of devising a viable health care plan without new taxes or spending or mandates that conservatives abhor.
