Just hours before his first Democratic debate as a 2020 contender, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spent about 10 minutes on the phone with an unlikely ally, talking about an unlikely topic: motherhood, with rapper megastar Cardi B.

The two reportedly FaceTimed to discuss their political viewpoints and talk about recording a conversation together. Then Sanders asked her about being a mother, according to Politico.

“Motherhood is good,” Cardi B reportedly said. “But it’s tough when you’re an artist. It’s like a whole two lives that you have to balance out.”

The 26-year-old rapper is a supremely powerful ally for the senator, according to his aides, especially given her status on social media. Just before the second Democratic debate, the two met up again and recorded a video of their conversation, which was supposed to last just 15 minutes, but ended up lingering for nearly an hour. The two have spoken on the phone or in person three times in the past few months, Politico reported.
