California Democrats are swiping back as President Donald Trump gleefully muses about dumping immigrants in sanctuary cities to punish the lawmakers who instituted the policy.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) pointed out the inconsistencies in Trump’s desire to boot immigrants from the country and simultaneous threat to load them into U.S. city centers.
“Which one is it, Mr. President?” Newsom asked during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “That fundamental flaw in the logic needs to be considered.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) added that immigrants “are people, not pawns” while Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) demanded that Trump stop spreading “hate and division.”
The sanctuary city proposal has already been brought up and shot down during internal administration discussions, but the President seems to be reacting to it anew after the Washington Post broke that the policy had once been on the table. DHS officials told the White House that the policy would be illegal, economically unfeasible and bad PR.
