Another 4,427,000 unemployment claims were filed in the week ending on April 18, the Labor Department reported on Thursday.

Total unemployment claims in the U.S. amid the COVID-19 pandemic have now reached more than 26 million over the past five weeks.

The latest unemployment claims numbers likely mean the nation’s unemployment rate is near 20 percent, according to Washington Post economics correspondent Heather Long.
