President-elect Joe Biden is stepping in the high-stakes Georgia Senate runoffs to boost Democratic candidates Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in their bids to unseat incumbent Sens. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and David Perdue (R-GA), respectively.
The Biden transition team announced on Thursday that the president-elect will travel to Atlanta on Tuesday the 15th to campaign for Warnock, Ossoff, “and the Democratic ticket” ahead of the Senate elections on January 5.
President Donald Trump’s campaign sounded the alarm on Biden’s plans, warning supporters in an email that the trip “proves that Democrats are taking the Senate runoff elections seriously and so should Republicans.”
Biden endorsed the two Democrats a little over a week before the general elections, saying that Ossoff would put his “passion” to “work for all Georgians, fighting for Georgia’s working families, not the powerful” and that Warnock is “a man of faith, integrity, and a fighter for working families.”
“We need [Warnock] in the Senate to keep up that fight and help push our country forward to restore the soul of this nation,” said Biden.
The two runoffs, the only chances Democrats have to gain control of the Senate, will determine whether Biden will have the support he needs in both chambers of Congress to circumvent potential obstruction from the GOP.
