President Joe Biden is expected to announce on Wednesday his plan to order an additional 100 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot COVID-19 vaccine.
The New York Times reports that Biden will make the announcement during his meeting with Johnson & Johnson and Merck executives at the White House in the afternoon.
Administration officials told the Times that the doses are expected to be distributed in the second half of the year.
Last week, Biden announced there would be enough vaccine supply, which is also being produced by Merck and Pfizer, for every adult in the country by the end of May. Merck and Pfizer’s vaccines require two shots.
More than 93.5 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the U.S. and 9.7 percent of the population is fully vaccinated as of Wednesday morning, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
