While Senator Fraser Anning spoke to reporters, a 17-year-old boy came up behind him and smashed a raw egg on his head, according to British outlet ITV.
Anning responded by punching the kid in the face, and the two fell to the ground in a scuffle. Per ITV, the boy was later arrested.
Anning, who represents Queensland, sent a press release after the New Zealand massacre blaming the shooting on the “fear” caused by an “increasing Muslim presence.”
The statement, obtained by the Los Angeles Times, sparked widespread backlash including from Australia’s prime minister who called the response “disgusting.”
