Joyce Gist Lewis, lawyer for former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, is striking a defiant tone in response to the new ethics commission chief’s decision to subpoena the Abrams campaign’s finance records.
She’s got “nothing to hide,” Lewis said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, though they were “surprised to learn through media coverage” that David Emadi is subpoenaing the campaign’s bank records, as well as those of the PACs who supported it.
“Assuming that you are willing to articulate the good faith reasons for the records sought, my client will offer its full cooperation without the need to resort to a subpoena,” Lewis wrote. “Should any technical reporting errors be identified by your office, my client will promptly amend its reports, as is routine for campaign committees in the State of Georgia.”
Emadi announced the probe of Abrams’ campaign, which he may extend to the campaigns of Atlanta mayoral candidates, on his first day on the job. He was immediately accused of partisanship, since he contributed to the campaign of Abrams’ opponent, now-Gov. Brian Kemp (R), and has not mentioned investigating any Republicans.
