Two and a half years after Trump left office as the only President in U.S. history to refuse to accept the results of an election that unseated him, he’s getting the first measure of criminal accountability.
Trump’s initial appearance in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case about the former President’s alleged conspiracy to reverse his 2020 defeat took place this afternoon at Washington D.C.’s E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse.
Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya presided over the initial proceeding. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan for the District of Columbia is assigned to try the case, but did not have a role in today’s hearing.
Trump himself only deigned to make a brief visit to D.C., arriving via private jet and then motorcade. He pleaded not guilty to all four charges against him, flanked by attorneys Todd Blanche and John Lauro. Thomas Windom and Molly Gaston from Smith’s team appeared as prosecutors.
