The third night of the Republican National Convention matched up with the subdued tone of Vice President Mike Pence, the keynote speaker.
With his signature aw-shucks delivery, Pence painted Joe Biden as a radical liberal who will defund police departments across the nation (he won’t).
Pence addressed the unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, who was paralyzed after an officer shot him seven times in the back as he was opening his car door. But while Pence called for the violence to cease in cities like Minneapolis, Portland and Kenosha, the vice president failed to mention the precipitating events to the unrest. There was no mention of George Floyd, the Black man who died after a white officer knelt on his neck for several minutes. Pence also did not address Blake.
The evening featured a number of prominent women speaking out in support of President Trump, including outgoing White House counselor Kellyanne Conway and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. It was a jarring contrast from some of the President’s past crude comments about women.
Finally, the coronavirus pandemic, which has now killed more than 180,000 Americans, did not factor into the program at all until Pence, who leads the White House’s COVID-19 task force, took the stage.
